Building a Successful Real Estate Business Through Growth Mindset and Faith with Evan Downey
By Shaune Corbett· · Updated

Building a successful real estate business isn’t easy. There are tough markets, tough clients, and days when you feel like you’re spinning your wheels. But what if your success wasn’t just about leads and listings? What if it came down to how you think, who you serve, and what you believe in?
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Evan Downey on my podcast to dig into that exact question. Evan is a broker associate with eXp Realty in Dallas, TX, and leads the Evan Downey Real Estate Group. His approach is honest, practical, and grounded in purpose.
In this blog post, I’m sharing the biggest takeaways from our conversation!
From Copier Sales to Real Estate: Evan’s Path to Purpose
Before real estate, Evan was selling copiers door-to-door for Xerox. That kind of sales job builds thick skin fast. He learned how to handle rejection, how to talk to anyone, and how to stay focused when people say “no”.
But over time, he realized the copier industry wasn’t the future. He wanted something that mattered more—something that would last.
His dad, a longtime broker, had planted that real estate seed early. Eventually, Evan took the leap. He started part-time, and when the results came, he went all in.
Now, with eight years in the business and a thriving career in Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Evan says those early sales days taught him grit. And, grit still fuels him today!
Defining the Ideal Client
Evan works with both buyers and sellers—about 50/50—but has a special place for investors, since he invests himself.
What really excites him, though, are listings in East Dallas—homes with history and properties with character; not cookie-cutter builds, but places that tell a story.
Evan’s client strategy includes:
- Focusing on homes near White Rock Lake, Lakewood, and East Dallas
- Attracting investors through shared knowledge and experience
- Prioritizing listings of architecturally unique or historic homes
- Building relationships over transactions always
Leading with Faith: Real Estate as a Calling
Evan didn’t just get into real estate for money. There was a need in his church.
People needed help with home buying, and there wasn’t a go-to residential agent in the community. He felt called to fill that gap.
Faith isn’t just part of Evan’s life. It’s part of his business. He prays with clients, talks through major decisions, and sees home buying as a spiritual milestone, not just a financial one.
Real Estate as Part of a Larger Mission
One example Evan shared hit home for me:
A church member was preparing to move to Europe as a missionary. Evan helped her sell her home so she could be free of financial ties and follow God’s call. That’s not a transaction. That’s ministry.
Growth Mindset in Action
Evan’s success isn’t accidental. It comes from intentional growth.
A Big Family Decision
He and his wife made a bold choice. She left her job as a physician assistant to stay home and homeschool their kids. That meant Evan had to step up financially, and fast.
Chasing Growth, Year After Year
He’s grown his business every year by at least 10–30%. He’s hit ICON status at eXp for the last three years, putting him in the top 5% of agents nationwide. But more than anything, he’s motivated by his role as a husband and father.
“Leveling up” isn’t just a business phrase for Evan. It’s how he lives.
Sharing Success: Mentorship, Sales Strategy, and Investing Smarts
One of the things I admire most about Evan is his openness. He doesn’t believe in keeping secrets. He shares what works because he knows there’s more than enough business to go around.
At eXp, that mindset thrives. He found a culture of collaboration, not competition. And, it’s helped him grow faster than he ever could’ve on his own.
