Building a Real Estate Business with Heart and Integrity: My Conversation with Ryan Enos

Two real estate agents talking in a bright modern office, representing trust and collaboration.

Building a real estate business takes more than sales skills—it requires heart, service, and consistency. That’s why I started Real Estate Success DFW—to share the real stories behind top-producing agents who’ve built their success the right way.

In this episode, I sit down with Ryan Enos, a Compass team leader with a wealth of experience. Ryan’s journey is one of growth, learning, and a focus on what truly matters—serving others. We dive into his path, his challenges, and how he’s built a thriving business rooted in client care and integrity.

From Counseling to Real Estate

Ryan didn’t grow up dreaming about selling homes. In his early twenties, he was working with a nonprofit ministry while pursuing a master’s degree in counseling. He wanted to help people but wasn’t sure what shape that would take.

That’s when a friend and mentor, JT Hardcastle, had just earned his broker’s license and needed an agent. Ryan wasn’t convinced at first. Newly married and balancing work and school, real estate wasn’t part of the plan. But after hearing the classic pitch, “If you sell one house, you’ll make your money back,” he decided to give it a try.

He got his license, joined JT’s brokerage, and thought it would be a small side gig. Instead, it became a calling. Thirteen years later, Ryan’s still thriving in the industry, proving that the best careers often start with an unexpected opportunity.

Lessons Learned from Running a Brokerage

After several successful years, Ryan earned his broker’s license and launched his own independent brokerage in 2017. Within a short time, he grew to 11 agents—a major milestone.

But, as he shared with me, success came with sacrifice. Running a brokerage meant wearing two hats: one as a producing agent and one as a business owner.

“One job paid me really well, and the other one didn’t—but they both took the same energy.”

I could relate. Having built my own brokerage years ago, I understood the challenge of trying to scale while managing staff, compliance, and marketing. As I always say, the root word of broker is broke.

Eventually, Ryan transitioned his business under Compass, where he could focus on what he loved most—coaching, leading, and building a high-performing team without the strain of managing everything alone.

“I’m grateful for that time because it gave me an appreciation for what brokers go through. But I’m also grateful not to be a broker-owner anymore.”

That kind of clarity only comes from experience.

It reminded me that both real estate and podcast production require the same foundation—vision, structure, and a commitment to doing things the right way from day one.

Building a Business on Client Care

What separates Ryan from most agents is how deeply he invests in client care. He started his career by working with investors and flippers, learning about renovations, costs, and construction firsthand. That knowledge gave him an edge early on.

Over the years, Ryan built a client concierge model designed to make the buying and selling process seamless. His team includes a full-time staff member dedicated to coordinating everything from make-readies and inspections to post-closing repairs.

“We’ve invested heavily in client relationships—before, during, and after closing. For every dollar you spend on client care, it’s worth ten to twenty dollars in marketing.”

That philosophy has paid off. Instead of chasing online leads, Ryan focuses on creating lifetime clients who become loyal advocates. His business now runs largely on referrals and word-of-mouth—proof that genuine service always comes full circle.

Competing on Value, Not Price

Ryan and I discussed one of the most important decisions an agent can make—whether to compete on price or on value. You can’t do both.

He compared it to Walmart versus Whole Foods. Both are successful, but they appeal to different customers. Ryan’s model aligns with the Whole Foods approach: high-touch, high-quality service that attracts clients who appreciate care and attention.

“Not everyone’s going to hire us. And that’s okay. We don’t need everyone. We just need the right clients who value what we do.”

That’s the secret to long-term success. When you’re clear on your value and deliver it consistently, the right clients find you.

Collaboration Over Competition

Two real estate professionals meeting in a bright modern office, reviewing property documents and discussing home details.

We also talked about collaboration—something that’s often missing in traditional real estate offices.

Brick-and-mortar brokerages can create competitive environments where agents hold their cards close, worried someone might steal a client. But cloud-based brokerages have changed that. They’ve opened the door for collaboration and shared success.

Ryan and I both believe there’s more than enough business for everyone. Even though we live less than 15 minutes apart, we’re not competitors—we’re peers who want to see each other win.

“I don’t compete for business anymore. I come from a place of service. If a client interviews other agents, I tell them they should. It’s a big decision.”

That attitude says it all. Real success comes from abundance, not scarcity.

The Best Advice He Ever Received

When I asked Ryan about the best advice he’s ever received, he went back to his roots. His mentor, JT Hardcastle, told him something simple that stuck:

“Just take really good care of people, and your business will grow.”

At first, Ryan wanted a more detailed playbook. But after more than a decade in the industry, he realized that was the secret. If you treat clients with honesty, respect, and care, they’ll do the marketing for you.

It’s advice I couldn’t agree with more.

Finding Rest and Protecting Your Energy

Before wrapping up, we talked about something that affects every agent—finding rest in a 24/7 business.

Ryan shared that rest doesn’t come naturally to high achievers. You have to be intentional about it.

“You have to choose to prioritize rest first. Don’t rest from your work—work from rest.”

He emphasized systematizing tasks, hiring a transaction coordinator, and outsourcing early to preserve time and focus. It’s about creating space for what truly matters—family, creativity, and growth.

For me, one thing that’s helped is writing things down the moment they come to mind. I add them to my calendar or reminders so I can clear my head. Once it’s written down, I stop thinking about it. Ryan calls this his “second brain,” and it’s a game-changer for staying balanced.

He even charges his phone in another room at night—a small but powerful boundary that helps him disconnect.

Here are my biggest takeaways from our conversation:

  • Start with service. Your reputation will build your business.
  • Build systems early. Structure creates sustainability.
  • Know your lane. Compete on value, not price.
  • Collaborate freely. There’s enough business for everyone.
  • Protect your peace. Rest fuels growth.
